First Year – Spa Massage Practitioner Certificate

Take the next step, Intake now open!

The Spa Massage Practitioner program (SMP) is a prerequisite for entry to the second year Massage Therapy program (MT). Graduates of the MT program will be eligible to practice as Registered Massage Therapists (RMT). This program is available on weekends (one weekend per month) or on Wednesday nights (Edmonton, Calgary, Grande Prairie, and Lloydminster campuses). The SMP program runs over 30 weeks, plus a home study and practicum component which totals 1,000 hours. Practicum is completed in our Student Clinic or through an external clinic (if the student lives 40km away from a Student Clinic). Our Student Clinic provides students with valuable RMT-supervised experience treating the public in a real clinic environment.

Our Spa Massage Practitioner Certificate program provides students with the knowledge to provide a safe and ethical one-hour relaxation massage using a variety of Swedish Massage techniques.  Students will also be introduced to Case History, Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Terminology and Hydrotherapy.  Graduates of the SMP program will have the ability to work independently or as an employee at spas, resorts or cruise ships. Upon completion of this program, graduates may obtain associate or student memberships with the Natural Health Practitioners of Canada (NHPC), the Canadian Massage and Manual Osteopathic Therapists Association (CMMOTA) or the Massage Therapist Association of Alberta (MTAA).

Completion of this program is required for entry to the second year Massage Therapy Diploma program which enables graduates to practice as an RMT.

This program is eligible for Alberta Student Loans.
